Psychotropics and the Elderly
Psychotropic medications are frequently used in the elderly population to manage a variety of psychiatric disorders (e.g. dementia, depression) and symptoms (e.g. dementia-related psychosis, insomnia). Many of the psychotropic medications used in the elderly have not been evaluated as rigorously for safety and efficacy as they have been in younger populations and pose greater safety risks in the elderly population. This program will explore the evidence base for various classes of psychotropic medications and discuss ways in which these types of medications may be used most effectively in the elderly population. The presenter will be Shane Martine, PharmD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Ohio Northern University.
